Applied Research and Innovation Services

SAIT Polytechnic’s research priority is to further student knowledge and experience through innovative, industry-driven projects that solve practical problems. By focusing on prototyping, simulation and validation, students build their expertise and generate solutions to meet the needs of industry, government and the community.

SAIT’s Applied Research and Innovation Services is recognized for its activities in clean technologies, sports and wellness engineering, electronics, information and communications technologies, health technologies, culinary technologies and technologies for the oil and gas industry through projects that include biodiesel processing, skeleton sled prototyping and development, industrial water and waste-water treatment, Net-Zero home development, radio frequency identification applications, wind-powered energy systems, quantum key development and many others.

Over the past three years, more than 260 SAIT students have been awarded over $130,000 to carry out innovative coursework projects through a fund supported by SAIT, the Alberta Association of Colleges and Technical Institutes, NSERC, SAIT’s ’88 Olympics Legacy Fund and Alberta Advanced Education and Technology. As well, approximately $375,000 is currently available to support other applied research projects involving students. Since its inception in 2008, SAIT’s Applied Research Fund has awarded over $353,000 to various applied research projects involving SAIT and industry.

2009-10 was the inaugural year for LAUNCH, a business plan competition supported by the Alberta government’s Technopreneurship Program, SAIT and Fasken Martineau Dumoulin LLP. The program is designed to help SAIT students and alumni start businesses in the Calgary region. Three prize packages with a total value of more than $79,000 were awarded to the three most promising ventures in June 2010.

SAIT’s long-term commitment to applied research includes the $13.5 million, 30,000 square foot Enerplus Innovation Centre as part of the new Trades and Technology Complex slated for completion in 2012.

Newcomer integration

The English Language Foundations (ELF) program provides language upgrading for learners whose first language is not English. A skills-based curriculum encourages development in all language areas: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Computer technology is incorporated into the program. The program has six start dates per year (8-week terms). Full and part-time studies are offered. Most ELF students are preparing for admission into SAIT career programs.

International Activities and International Educational Partnerships

Two on-campus residences provide housing for local and international students. The International Centre offers full student services and support including social, cultural and recreational activities that provide the opportunity for students to integrate with peers from more than 120 countries. Collaboration agreements have been established with English language schools and high schools across Canada to attract international students. Diversity and growth are key priorities as SAIT continues to increase its number of full-time international students. http://sait.ca/pages/cometosait/internationalstudents/international_centre/index.shtml

SAIT is a partner in the Global Education Network along with Box Hill Institute (Melbourne, Australia), Kirkwood Community College (Cedar Rapids, Iowa, U.S.A.), and the Institute of Technical Education (Singapore). This initiative offers students in participating academic programs the opportunity to study abroad at a partner institution for a full semester or to participate in a short-term exchange of three weeks. http://gen.sait.ca/

SAIT also offers expertise in training for workforce nationalization to the oil and gas industry worldwide. For more than three decades, SAIT has worked with multinational companies to support their workforce nationalization goals by designing and delivering workforce development solutions to nationalize their local workers. SAIT’s unique Training Solution for Workforce Nationalization includes recruitment, assessment and learner support services; preparatory training (foundational science, English as a second language and occupational English); hands-on technical training (operations and maintenance, health, safety and environment); as well as management and cultural awareness training. http://www.sait-training.com/
